When allergies strike, look for one of the best known systems for purifying air, a HEPA filtering system.

Many of today's HEPA filters also contain activated carbon to absorb odors and gas from chemicals from paint, carpet, cleaning products, and furniture. The larger the amount of activated carbon included as part of the filtering system, the greater the amount of pollutants that can be absorbed from the air.  The cheaper units will likely have a very small amount of carbon, compared to the three to fifteen pounds of activated carbon in the better units.

Some are advertised as "99% HEPA", "HEPA-like" or "HEPA-type". This likely means the filter in the air purifier is not a true HEPA rated filter and therefore will not provide the same level of purification.
